Britain For Less - Holiday Tips

How do you see the King’s Road, Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square, the Law Courts and the Bank of England for only £1?

Just hop on a Number 11 double-decker bus and see the great sights of London from your seat. It’s one of the many London bus routes that offer sightseeing for £1.

You can buy your bus pass from over 2,400 convenient local travel ticket outlets throughout the city, or at Tube stations and London Travel information centres.

Buy half-price theatre tickets at the last minute, right in the heart of London’s theatreland.

The Tkts booth in the small Clock Tower building in the middle of Leicester Square, previously known as the Half-Price Ticket Booth, sells discounted tickets to performances ranging from lively musicals and comedies to famous operas and Shakespearian tragedies.

You can see at a glance which shows have tickets available by looking at the two noticeboards in front of the booth. You will have to queue to get your special deals so it’s a good idea to arrive early. The nearest Tube stations are Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus.

Buy designer clothes at bargain prices in the heart of the British countryside – at special shopping outlets.

Head for purpose-built shopping villages such as Sterling Mills Designer Outlet Village near Stirling in Scotland, Bicester village in Oxfordshire, Atlantic Village in north Devon, and McArthurGlen Designer Outlets in York, Ashford, Swindon and Bridgend.

You’ll find end-of-the-line and previous season’s designs reduced by up to 60%, with brands ranging from Benetton to Versace.

Find classic English china and porcelain at discount prices in the factories where they’re made.

You can snap up quality crafts at special discount prices if you go to factory shops and buy direct from the manufacturers. You can also have a look round many of the factories.

The Potteries region near Stoke-on-Trent, home to many world-famous china and porcelain makers, boasts more than 40 factory shops where Royal Doulton figures, classic Wedgwood vases, Spode tea sets and many more collectable items are for sale.

You can also buy fine glassware at superb discounts from Edinburgh Crystal in Penicuik and lustrous Belleek China from its factory shop in County Fermanagh. In Derbyshire, follow the Amber Valley Individual Factory Shops Trail to good-value places like the Denby Pottery and De Bradelei Mill Shop.

Enjoy a wide range of British cuisine for under £5 – anywhere in the country.

Some of Britain’s favourite dishes are also its most famous – and its cheapest. A portion of fish and chips costs less than £5 anywhere in the country. An Indian meal costs less than £10. Or try a Chinese takeaway.

They’re the meals the British people like to eat, which is why they taste so good and cost so little.

View the biggest civic art collection in the UK for nothing, and visit one of Britain’s most exciting cities while you’re at it.

Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, is a vibrant centre for the arts, both traditional and modern. The city has the biggest civic art collection in the UK and entry to the city’s numerous museums is free of charge.

Take a ferry to the magical island of Devenish in Northern Ireland, with its perfect 12th century round tower and museum

The passenger ferry from Trory Point is the easiest, cheapest way to reach Devenish Island in County Fermanagh, where entry to the tower and museum is free. And in summer ferries run regular services to the early Christian island sites on Lough Erne.

Discover a huge array of Irish art and history in Belfast’s Ulster Museum

The Ulster Museum in Belfast boasts nearly 6,000 square metres of galleries and large collections of art, history and natural sciences. The variety and richness of the collections is outstanding, with a constantly changing programme of temporary exhibitions, films, workshops and family activities. Admission is free.

Experience Scottish dancing, tossing the caber and the bagpipes at Scotland’s summer festivals

For a modest entry fee you can enjoy Scottish dancing, tossing the caber and bagpipe music at the summertime Highland Games.

Highland Games are held in Scotland from the end of May through to the middle of September every year, attracting crowds from several hundred to over 10,000 at some of the larger games.

Explore the battle-scarred castles of Wales

One hundred Welsh treasures – such as Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber and battle-scarred castles like medieval Grosmont – are entirely free to visit. They’re all cared for by CADW: Welsh Historic Monuments. Other CADW attractions including the World Heritage listed castles of Beaumaris, Caenarfon, Conwy and Harlech, charge just a few pounds entry fee and absolutely nothing if you purchase a 3-day or 7-day Explorer Pass. The 3-day pass costs £9 per adult.
