| The National Cycle Network officially opened in June 2000, with work continuing. It is administered by Sustrans and offers 5,000 miles of continuous routes. This is the first stage of a larger network which will eventually pass within two miles of half the population.
A third of the Network will be traffic-free, built along old railway lines, canal towpaths, forestry tracks and riversides. The rest will follow existing roads; quiet minor roads will be used for country sections and there will be special crossings over busy roads where needed.
