Cycle Networks

The National Cycle Network officially opened in June 2000, with work continuing. It is administered by Sustrans and offers 5,000 miles of continuous routes. This is the first stage of a larger network which will eventually pass within two miles of half the population.

A third of the Network will be traffic-free, built along old railway lines, canal towpaths, forestry tracks and riversides. The rest will follow existing roads; quiet minor roads will be used for country sections and there will be special crossings over busy roads where needed.
