Bicycles on Public Transport

Underground
London Underground allows bicycles to be taken onto trains free of charge from 'open stations'. An open station is one that is above ground or has just a few steps down to the platform. Bicycles cannot be taken into central London as all the stations are below ground level. You cannot travel between the hours of 07:30 - 09:30, and 16:00 - 19:00, from Monday to Friday (except public holidays). Bicycles must not be taken on moving escalators, the Victoria Line or the Waterloo & City Line.

Bicycles are allowed on the following parts of the Underground:
  • Circle, District, East London, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan Lines - Bicycles permitted on all sections.
  • Bakerloo Line - Bicycles may be taken in the direction from Queen's Park to Harrow & Wealdstone in the morning peak and vice versa in the evening peak.
  • Central Line - Bicycles may be taken between White City to West Ruislip/Ealing Broadway. Leyton to Epping. Newbury Park/Woodford to Hainault.
  • Jubilee Line - Bicycles permitted between Finchley Road - Stanmore and Canning Town - Stratford;
  • Northern Line - Bicycles may be taken between Edgware - Colindale. Hendon Central - Golders Green. East Finchley to High Barnet/Mill Hill East.
  • Piccadilly Line - Bicycles permitted between Barons Court and Hounslow West/Uxbridge. Cockfosters to Oakwood.

National Rail Network
All train companies carry bikes but only a limited number can be carried. On some services bikes are carried on a first-come first-served basis: on others spaces must be reserved in advance. These services are marked by a recognisable symbol.

Many train companies allow bikes to travel free, others, mainly over long distances, may make a charge. If travel involves more than one train company, only one fee is payable for the whole journey - the higher of the fees will be charged.

Tips for people travelling on public transport with a bike:
  • Plan ahead
  • Buy travel tickets and reserve space in advance
  • Remove anything from the bicycle that is not a fixture
  • Some trains have symbols to indicate the closest door to the cycle storage areas on the train
