Britain's GardensGardens are one of Britain’s most popular attractions with overseas visitors. Furthermore, research carried out by the British Tourist Authority (BTA) has shown that heritage, stately homes and gardens combined are the number one motivating factor amongst those choosing Britain as a holiday destination.

Britain’s gardens are everywhere…they are found in the grounds of castles such as 13th Century Hever Castle, Kent, Stately Homes such as Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire – birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill - and within huge, futuristic, glass domes such as the Eden Project in Cornwall.

The better known attractions such as Henry VIII’s Hampton Court Palace along with its famous maze, Inverewe Garden in the Scottish Highlands and Levens Hall in Cumbria have impressed visitors for centuries. However, these gardens cannot rest on their laurels, as some of the newest attractions are on an equally grand scale. For example, the National Botanic Garden of Wales is centred around the largest single-span glasshouse in the world.

The BTA’s Britain’s Gardens campaign, which is supported by a map and website, focuses on the following:

  • Details about Britain’s best gardens and how to find them

  • Information about tour operators which offer garden themed holidays

  • Monthly spotlights, featuring different parts of Britain

  • An online database of over 400 gardens

  • The history of Britain’s gardens and famous garden designers including Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.

  • Popular garden holiday itineraries

  • ‘Garden of the month’ focus

  • Promotional literature: Britain’s Gardens brochure (available in English, French, Dutch, German, Italian, Japanese, Swedish and Danish)
