Crews planning to visit Britain for a travel and tourism story should, in the first instance, contact their local British Tourist Authority (BTA) office. BTA overseas offices also have considerable broadcast-quality footage that film crews can use, free of copyright and at minimal cost.
Points to bear in mind when planning your itinerary:
- Give plenty of notice, at least six weeks
- Plan your filming schedule carefully
- Keep your crew small, using hand-held equipment if possible
- Have correct documentation, ie international carnet and insurance. For further information about insurance, use the search functions of the following websites (typing ‘insurance companies’):
- Bring a mobile phone
- Using a driver or guide can save you time by giving advice and taking your crew to the best locations.
- There is no general permit for filming in the street in Britain
- All interior filming must be set up by appointment
- Should you be interested in filming at Historic Royal Palaces, eg Hampton Court, Kensington Palace, Tower of London, contact should be made via website www.hrp.org.uk - click on the “press news” link on the home page.
