  • BTA expects 2002 to end with overseas visitor numbers up by at least 3% and spending up by at least 1% on 2001. BTA anticipates that in 2003, both inbound visits and spending will increase by between 3% and 4% on 2002 figures

    A new ‘Golf in Britain’ guide for overseas visitors has been launched by the British Tourist Authority (BTA) to position Britain as a preferred destination for golf.

    OCTOBER FIGURES SHOW BOOST IN VISITS AND SPEND
    Latest figures from the International Passenger Survey for October 2002, released today, show that:

    In OCTOBER 2002 (compared with OCTOBER 2001):

    Overseas visitors to the UK increased by 26 per cent to 2.05 million

    Spending in the UK by overseas visitors increased by 20 per cent to £935 million

    House of Commons tourism inquiry: The House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee took oral evidence from the Tourism Alliance and the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, who appeared together with Dr Kim Howells MP, Minister for Tourism. The Committee focussed largely on the BTA/ETC merger, Government support for tourism and the performance of the inbound tourism industry.     FIRST EVER IRISH TRAVEL AGENTS ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN BRITAIN
    For the first time ever, the Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) will hold their annual conference in Britain. Over 300 delegates will attend the Conference, entitled ‘The Challenge of Changing Times’ which will be held at Gosforth Park Marriott Hotel, Newcastle over the weekend of the 28-30 November 2002. The event is being organised in partnership with the British Tourist Authority (BTA).

    IMPACT OF AVIATION CAPACITY CONSTRAINT ON INBOUND TOURISM
    The British Tourist Authority (BTA) has released research findings that show that if no new airport capacity is provided by 2030, the British economy will forego £9.3bn in inbound tourism revenue and 230,000 inbound tourism related jobs.

    On Thursday 31st October, 2002, the British Tourist Authority (BTA) unveiled its long term strategic plan to boost Britain’s income from tourism, make the marketing of Britain the best in the world and provide a framework within which the tourism industry can work in even closer partnership.

    TOURISM BODIES WELCOME REFORM
    The chairmen of the British Tourist Authority (BTA) and the English Tourism Council (ETC) have welcomed proposals to bring together the functions of their organisations and pledged to work closely together in the development of a lead body for tourism.

    FRIENDSHIP TOUR TO BOOST CONFIDENCE OF AMERICAN VISITORS
    Over one hundred American visitors will attend London’s Shakespeare’s Globe tonight (Friday) for the grand finale of a trip of a lifetime. The visitors have spent a week in Britain having successfully bid for the trip, and paid up to $5,000, on the USA’s Public Services Broadcasting (PBS) television network. The ‘Friendship Tour’ TV auction gained extensive coverage in the USA and is part of a major promotional and PR drive by the British Tourist Authority in the US market.
